Construction for the new runway northwest has begun in January 2009.  The groundbreaking ceremony was held on May 20th 2009. Construction for the new runway is in full progress.

The opening of the new runway northwest will enhance capacity at  Frankfurt Airport. The additional capacity will allow for 126 coordinated flight movements per hour - the number of flight movements per year can reach 700,000.  Frankfurt Airport will be able to handle the forecasted 88,3 million passengers for the year 2020. The new runway northwest is due to go into operation for the winter schedule 2010/11.
